Let Go of the Past and be in the Present
New Zealand by Cynthia Bergsbaken Photography. |
The past is the past! The
past is dead. Look at it as if it is a dead body. There is no
reason to visit it or be with it.
The future also does not hold any life.
The future has not happened yet. We do not know what will come to us.
There is only life in the present moment.
This is where we can hear our guidance from God/Holy spirits. God/Holy
spirits do not live in the past or the future. He/she lives within us and
only able to guide us in the present moment.
When we live in the past or future, we are
living an unconscious life. We are dream walkers, walking through life
oblivious to what is really going around us and with other people. We are
oblivious to our behaviors and how they affect our loved ones, our friends, and
strangers. The pain unconscious people cause to themselves and
others. Think back to when you were driving your vehicle. Did you
see that person change lanes in front of you with blinkers on or were you in
another place in your head causing you to slam on your breaks and blame the
other person for driving poorly.
Notice when you go into the past in your
thoughts. Listening to old rewinds of how someone hurt you or wishing you
were living back in the town you grew up in. What do you feel?
Regret? Negative feelings? Grief? Depression?
Resentments? Or maybe you're not aware of how you feel. All
negative emotions come from the root "fear". To me, God/Holy
spirit is love. Love encompasses all positive emotions.
Notice when you go into the future.
Listening to new stories on how you can't do something in life. Or what
would happen if this happened? What do you feel? Anxiety?
Nervousness? Fear? To obtain authentic loving guidance for some
situation, try keeping yourself in the present moment, even during times of
stress.
Whenever I notice myself re-thinking
situations/experiences or mentally sitting in past moments, I will stop myself
by saying in my head, "next." Just let it go. Your
intention is to keep your consciousness in the present moment.
Now place your attention on what you are
doing. If you're washing the dishes, feel the temperature of the water as
you wash. Notice the smell of the suds. Notice the feel of the
suds. Notice the feeling of the washcloth. And so on. Really
feel what each item feels like. Pay attention to every movement you
make. If a thought comes back to you from the past or the future, let it
go and get back to feeling, smelling, hearing, and sensing everything you are
around.
If you're walking in a store, pay attention to
every step you take. What does it feel like-your toes, your heel, your
legs, etc. Be in your body feeling/sensing instead of your head,
thinking. This is how you can stay present in the present moment.
It takes practice, but it is so worth the effort.
Make it a good habit of catching yourself
thinking of the past or the future. Release it and move on to really
being in the moment.
When you are able to stay in the present moment,
you will notice things you've never noticed before. You'll notice that
you stay calmer, happier, and more relaxed. You'll feel more
confident. You will be more loving to yourself and to others.
Here's to a more conscious world. A gentler
and more loving world. It all starts with YOU. You are the only one
that can walk the path of healing yourself. Why not start with learning
to be in the present moment.

as tools to help myself become a better person. I am sharing
them with you because used as a tool, they are helpful in Shadow working on
ourselves. (Shadow working is healing our inner shadows that are
unconscious or subconscious. Inner shadows are our belief systems,
our thoughts, our behaviors, our life experiences.)
I
created this blog for my Reiki clients originally. Combining these
tools with Reiki creates a happy, healthy person. These tools, when
used alone are also beneficial!
